Highlight Video: What to Include

  • The beginning should have a photo of you, if possible (so they know who to look for), club/school they play for, their jersey number, and position.
  • Other information to include in the opening and ending slide of your video. (Ex: Height, vertical, graduation year, GPA, etc.)
  • The video should be no less than 1 minutes and no more than 3 minutes in length
  • No sound is better than background chatter or explicit music.
  • A blank instrumental is okay on low volume if you can control that.
  • You can add an arrow, or indicators showing where your athlete is at in the video, but it is not required.
  • Separate different skills into sections within the video.  (Ex:  A setter should have clips of setting outside grouped together, then it moves on to middle, right side, defense, and serving.)
  • Start your video with your primary position. (Ex: If you are a MB, start with blocking or middle attacking NOT setting or backrow passing.)
  • DO NOT put any of your clips in slow motion.
  • Make sure you put a way to contact you, your parents, or your recruiting coordinator at the end. (For safety reasons, you can put your recruiting coordinators email or make your video private so only people you send it to can view it!)

How to Get Started:

Questions to ask yourself:
  •
    • How far from home am I willing to go?
    • What is the most realistic division for my skill level?
    • What size school am I looking to attend?
    • If I can no longer play volleyball, would I still want to attend this school?
    • What do I want to study in college?
    • Am I training, practicing, and competing at a high level?

  1. Make a list of ALL of the schools that fit your criteria listed above. This can be done on FieldLevel by ranking your target schools.
  2.  Be sure to do your research on the coaching staff, school. and the teams. (In doing this research, it might weed out some of the schools on your list.)
  3. Start contacting coaches.  (Note: Add the coaches' emails to your spreadsheet so you don’t have to go find them again!)  Your first email to a college coach should include:
    • Name
    • Recruiting Class
    • Position
    • High School and Club Team
    • GPA
    • A link to a highlight or game video (no more than 3 minutes long)
    • A copy of your schedule and where they can see you play
    • If you have your vertical training stats, it’s great to include those as well!
  4. How often to contact coaches:
    • Freshman - Every 3 months, send a follow up email
    • Sophomore - Once a month, let them know how your season is going
    • Junior/Senior - Before every tournament, let them know where you’ll be playing and how they can find you.  (Send updates at big tournaments and let them know how you’re doing while you’re there, and where they can find you the following day.)
    • Seniors - It is not too late. There are still school looking to fill those final open roster spots. Be very proactive!
  5. Respond to coaches (Note: Even if you aren't interested).
  6. Go on Campus visits (Note: as many unofficial visits as you like)
Quiet Period:

D1 volleyball has many quiet periods throughout the season, and this means they CANNOT watch players play at club tournaments during that time. D2, D3, and NAIA volleyball coaches CAN watch players play at club tournaments during this time. This is good for you to know, so you can focus on getting coaches ready to watch you play LIVE and get on their radar during the “quiet period”.
Quiet periods for the upcoming season:

  • December 1, 2025 – January 15, 2026
  • March 2–5, 9–12, 16–19 and 23–26, 2026
  • April 6–9, 2026
  • May 1–28, 2026

There is not quiet period for NJCAA (Community College) Schools.
